What fills your heart?

A friend sent me a voice note the other day, I hadn’t spoken to her in a few months but as soon I heard her voice, I was immediately taken back to being with her, I could feel her energy and warmth. My heart was filled with joy of hearing her voice. It reconnected me to that feeling that I got from her the love I feel towards her.

I use the word love a lot, more than most people do. For me there are various forms of love; romantic love, love for family, love for friends, love for places, experiences and even food.  All these loves defined by the fact that they fill my heart with joy and warmth. A feeling that this person, place or thing is special and connects with me emotionally.

This weekend I spent the weekend in Suffolk with my family. Sea air, quality family time, space  and time to just be free to immerse myself in the joy of this family trip. Those three days were a tonic, filling me with love and joy.

Isn’t that what life is about the people, places and moments that bring us joy. When life is hard or we are facing adversity we dig into our bag of resilience. But whilst we have to dig deep to find resolve and strength during the hard times, how do we replenish that strength. Simply the things that bring us joy, for me its catching up with good friends, snuggling up on the sofa with my son watching our shows, a date night with my husband or just a nice meal.

Life can be hard, life can be challenging, life can be relentless. Sometimes we can be so busy, so consumed by work, finances, chores and obligations. It is important that we don’t lose sight of what actually matters. What life is about is different for everyone, the truth is whatever fills your heart with love and deserves a meaningful place in your life. Cherish the people, the places and moments that fill your heart.

When life becomes busy and full of noise, responsibilities and demands, it becomes hard to hear ourselves. We can loose that sense of self and we can loose sight of what brings us joy, what actually matters and what we need.

Counselling offers a space where you can begin to hear yourself over the noise of expectations and daily life.
